Congaree National Park

This is one of those places where you have to wonder about the distinction between national monument and national park. I mean, this place is pretty small. You could fit several into Dinosaur National Monument for instance. I guess it’s not just about size when it comes to the difference between a monument and a park.

This place is beautiful. I love the spanish moss and the trees in the swamp. And hiking on raised boardwalks over water is one of my favorite things to do. Great views, lots of birds, wildlife, the sense that you are walking where you otherwise would never be able to (or want) to go.

My favorite things to do here

  • Boardwalk trail

Things I want to come back to do

  • River trail
  • Bring the kayaks down

Fun Facts

  • One of the more recent National Parks, upgraded from monument in 2003
  • Protection initiated by a grassroots campaign by the Sierra Club in 1969
