Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

chicamuga

A stones (or cannons) throw away from the Chattanooga Choo-Choo, this amazing park is accessed by driving up into the tall hills surrounding the Tennessee river. The views are stunning, and the visitor center really informative. Not being a very good student of history in high school, I never learned a lot about the war between the states. Learning about it at the actual sites is much better anyway. Just the thought of having to face these cannon from down below is enough to give anyone the chills. Good short hiking trails and interpretive signs here, make this part of one of America’s best history lessons.

My favorite things to do here

  • Hike around lookout mountain and see the views
  • Explore the Chickamauga Battlefield
  • Battle of lookout mountain painting in the visitor center

Things I want to come back to do

  • Visit moccasin bend once it is developed

Fun Facts

  • America’s first National Military Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Heading back from  a trip out west  to see a friend in Asheville, the Great Smoky Mountains happily lay in my way. After you navigate the traffic jam that is Pigeon Forge (home to Dollywood), you end up in some of the most pristine wilderness on the east coast. Most of this park seems to be designed to view from a car, which was just fine with me in this case. There are tons of pullouts with interpretive trails, and and ample supply of campgrounds and views.

My favorite things to do here

  • View scenery
  • Laurel Falls trail

Things I want to come back to do

  • Clingmans Dome
  • Tour the historic buildings
  • Visit the waterfalls

Fun Facts

  • Most visits of any National Park – 20 million in 2003

I have visited this site, but I have not done a blog post yet. I started with the National Parks. I’m then going to work through the Monuments. Then the rest. Stay Tuned! Add a comment if you like.
